Agility CIS targets rapid growth in booming Japanese energy market

Leading retail energy solutions provider Agility CIS is expanding its Japanese operations following a recent growth surge. Its goal is to become the largest provider of cloud lead-to-cash solutions in this market, capitalising on the rapid changes taking place following deregulation.

In the past year it has doubled its client base in Japan for its billing/CIS and EDM solutions, winning business from both domestic retailers and new international market entrants. This includes Univergy, a leading Spanish-owned solar-company aiming to capitalise on the demand for clean energy in the residential market; and Choshi Denyuku, a start-up public/private partnership serving residential and C&I customers with solar PV and electricity services.

Japan is one of the largest and fastest growing deregulated energy markets in the world. The country has a population of 126 million and a switching rate of approximately 20% (METI). 700 new entrants have flooded into the market in the past 5 years following a decade of energy market reform. While analysis by Bloomberg estimates the total market is now worth an estimated $136 billion dollars.

Agility possesses a unique offering in this market compared to competitors. It blends local Japanese market expertise, leading SaaS billing/CIS energy solutions, and deep industry experience gained over 20 years of operations. It supports domestic players expanding their operations by migrating them onto modern, cloud-native systems, and international retailers seeking a local technology partner to guide market entry.

To support its growth it is investing heavily in its people and services. Katsuya Takekawa has been appointed as Regional Development Supervisor for Znalytics GK. He has extensive experience in providing technology advisory services for energy retailers entering the market, having worked as a General Manager for the consulting practice of Japan’s 2nd largest utility. Takekawa is also a leading author and commentator on Japan’s energy market. His book ‘How to Manage Electricity retail businesses’ is a #1 best-seller in its category. A second office opening in Osaka in 2021 will further strengthen the companies local footprint.

Craig Jones, CEO of Agility CIS commented:

“Innovative international retailers are flooding into the Japanese energy market to seize the opportunities available. Our combination of next-generation cloud-native solutions and local expertise mean we can guide rapid market entry for these companies, providing the foundations for their growth.

Katsuya’s appointment further strengthens our presence in this market. He literally wrote the book on Japanese energy market deregulation, and will provide invaluable insights for our clients, driving forward their growth while accelerating our own expansion.”

Agility already serves thousands of end-customers in Japan through its subsidiary Znalytics GK. The company provides next generation, cloud-native platforms to manage the full lead-to-cash cycle, alongside digital portals and apps for customers to self-serve. Its core product, Energy Operations System, supports electricity, gas, and non-commodity product billing for residential and C&I customer bases, all from a single platform.

The Japanese team will be supported by Agility’s global workforce, comprising a best-in-class delivery center in Hyderabad, India, and R&D labs in Atlanta, USA. This enables the company to provide 24/7 DevOps support and blend local expertise with insights and innovations from more advanced energy markets.

Agility built its business in Australia and New Zealand. These countries are world leaders in deregulating, decentralising and digitising their energy markets. Agility is the largest provider of billing systems in Australia with its clients serving more than 2 million end customers.
